Yupo Project

When we started working with the yupo paper, I was immediately struck by its opacity. I knew from the beginning I wanted to create a type of lantern, with a light in the middle that shines out through shapes cut into the yupo. I created two shapes, one that had wider openings, and another that had small openings or small holes to experiment with positive and negative space. I initially imagined the two pieces hanging next to one another, but they exist better sitting on top of the candle. The candle pushes light through the shapes, casting shapes onto the wall behind the lantern.
